About

Welcome to Sólheimar Eco-Lodge — your gateway to Iceland's most remarkable intentional community. Sólheimar was founded in 1930 as a place where people of all abilities could live, work, and thrive together sustainably. Nearly a hundred years later, about a hundred people call this village home, and the spirit of inclusivity, creativity, and respect for nature is woven into everything we do. Our guesthouse offers simple, comfortable accommodation for travelers who want more than just a bed for the night. We have Eco Single Rooms with shared bathrooms for solo travelers, Eco Double Rooms with private bathrooms for couples, and Eco Family Rooms that sleep up to four. Everything is heated by geothermal energy — in fact, the entire village runs on renewable energy. Breakfast is always included, featuring organic produce from our own gardens, fresh-baked bread, Icelandic skyr, and eggs. What makes staying at Sólheimar truly special is the village itself. During your stay, you're invited to explore our geothermally heated greenhouses where we grow tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, and flowers year-round. Visit our candle-making workshop, where residents hand-pour beautiful candles using traditional techniques. Try the ceramic studio, where you can see (and try) pottery-making. Browse the art gallery featuring work by village residents. Or simply walk the nature trails that wind through birch groves and wetlands surrounding the village. Lunch is available at the village cafe, where everything is made from scratch using ingredients from our gardens and local farms. Dinner can be arranged in advance — let us know and we'll prepare something special. Sólheimar sits about thirty minutes from Selfoss and an hour from Reykjavík, tucked into a peaceful valley that feels wonderfully remote despite being easily accessible from Route 1. It's an ideal stop on the way to or from the Golden Circle, or as a base for exploring the Flúðir area with its natural hot springs (the Secret Lagoon is nearby). For many of our guests, Sólheimar becomes a highlight of their Iceland trip — not because of dramatic waterfalls or glaciers, but because of the people, the peaceful atmosphere, and the genuine sense of community. It's a place that reminds you what's possible when humans work with nature instead of against it. Check-in is between 15:00 and 20:00, and check-out is at 11:00. We have free parking and WiFi, though the WiFi here tends to be a bit slower than in Reykjavík — but that's part of the charm. Come see how Iceland's eco-pioneers live — you might leave with a new perspective on what matters.
