Vík í Mýrdal, South Iceland
Welcome to Súður-Vík — our family's restaurant in the heart of Vík í Mýrdal, where we've been feeding hungry travelers and locals since 2005. My wife and I started this place with a simple idea: serve honest Icelandic food made with the best ingredients we can find, in a warm space where people feel at home. Our lamb comes from farms right here on the south coast, where sheep roam free all summer grazing on wild herbs and grasses. That's the secret to Icelandic lamb — the flavor comes from the land itself. Our slow-cooked lamb shoulder has become something of a local legend, and once you try it, you'll understand why. The fish changes with the seasons and the catch — some days it's Arctic char from a nearby river, other days it's fresh cod or haddock straight off the boats. We always have a catch-of-the-day dish that showcases whatever is freshest. The restaurant sits in the center of the village, and from our dining room you can see the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the ocean — those dramatic rock pillars that legend says are trolls turned to stone by the sunrise. It's quite a backdrop for dinner. The space is cozy and warm, with wooden beams, soft lighting, and the kind of atmosphere where strangers end up chatting across tables and sharing travel stories. We're open daily from 11:30 to 21:00. At lunch we serve lighter fare — soups, sandwiches, fish and chips, and our famous mushroom soup that vegetarians (and everyone else) go wild for. Dinner is when we really shine, with heartier dishes, our full wine and beer list, and homemade desserts including a skyr cheesecake that has caused actual arguments about who gets the last slice. For groups of six or more, we offer a set dinner menu: a three-course meal featuring either our signature lamb or the day's fresh fish, followed by dessert and coffee. It's a wonderful way to share a meal with your travel companions after a big day on the south coast. We always have vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, and we're happy to accommodate gluten-free diets. Just let us know when you book and we'll make sure there's something delicious waiting for you. Reservations are recommended for dinner, especially during summer when Vík fills up with Ring Road travelers. Walk-ins are usually fine for lunch. Free parking right outside. Come hungry — you won't leave disappointed.
