Vík í Mýrdal, South Iceland
Welcome to Vík Horse Tours — where the legendary Icelandic horse meets one of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. Our family has been breeding and riding Icelandic horses in this area for decades, and sharing these incredible animals with visitors is our greatest joy. The Icelandic horse is something truly special. Isolated on this island for over a thousand years, they've developed a unique fifth gait called the tölt — a smooth, flowing movement that makes riding incredibly comfortable even for beginners. They're also known for their friendly, curious personalities. Don't be surprised if your horse nudges you for attention before you've even mounted. We offer three tours that showcase different faces of this stunning landscape. Our Black Beach Ride is a one-and-a-half-hour tour along Reynisfjara, riding across the famous black volcanic sand with the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the ocean beside you. It's suitable for complete beginners — our guides will teach you everything you need to know before we set off. The Lava Field Ride is a two-and-a-half-hour journey through the ancient Eldhraun lava fields, carpeted in thick green moss, with views of glaciers and mountains in every direction. And our Mountain Trail Ride is a four-hour adventure into the highlands above Vík for intermediate riders, with panoramic views that stretch from the coast to the interior. All safety equipment is provided — helmets are mandatory and we have them in all sizes. We recommend wearing warm layers, a waterproof jacket, long pants, and closed shoes. We also have rain gear available because, well, this is Iceland and the weather likes to keep us guessing. But we ride in almost all conditions — only extreme storms will cancel a tour. Our weight limit is 100 kilograms, which we take seriously for the welfare of our horses. The minimum age is eight for the Beach Ride and twelve for the Mountain Trail. We're based just outside Vík, and the meeting point is at our stable. The drive from the village takes about five minutes. Before each tour, you'll have time to meet your horse, get comfortable, and receive riding instructions. Our guides are experienced riders who know these trails intimately and love sharing stories about the horses, the history of the area, and Icelandic culture. Riding an Icelandic horse through this landscape is one of those experiences that connects you to Iceland in a way that no bus tour or rental car ever could. The rhythm of the hooves on black sand, the wind carrying the salt air, the vastness of it all — it's something you feel rather than just see. Come ride with us. The horses are waiting.
